Choosing the right family SUV means balancing daily practicality with weekend adventure...
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is arriving at dealerships across Ontario, bringing a complete transformation to Canada's best-selling passenger vehicle. As the country's top compact SUV for nearly three decades, this sixth generation introduces bold design choices, advanced technology, and a fully electrified lineup.
Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC), the 2026 RAV4 joins Toyota's list of exclusively electrified models. With over 940,000 RAV4s sold in Canada since 1996, this latest generation builds on that legacy while addressing the evolving needs of modern families, adventurers, and commuters.
Three Distinct Design Philosophies
The 2026 RAV4 offers three exterior design languages, each tailored to different lifestyles.
Core Design captures a sleek, modern aesthetic with a paint-matched grille and Toyota's signature hammerhead front end. Wide overfenders with black cladding and an ascending beltline create a refined SUV presence. The Core lineup includes the LE, XLE, XLE Premium Package, and Limited grades, with wheel sizes from 17 to 20 inches.
Rugged Design is exclusive to the Woodland grade. It features a slightly raised hammerhead peak and a split black grille with integrated Rigid Industries LED lighting. This outdoor-inspired variant sits higher off the ground and rides on all-terrain tires for drivers who venture beyond paved roads.
Sport Design brings an aggressive aesthetic to the XSE and GR SPORT grades. These models feature up to 20-inch wheels with increased offset, a GR Functional MATRIX grille (on GR SPORT), and front and rear spoilers. Blue interior stitching and available two-tone paint combinations complete the look.
A Fully Electrified Lineup
Every 2026 RAV4 comes standard with all-wheel drive, providing enhanced traction across Ontario's diverse weather conditions.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Models feature Toyota's fifth-generation Hybrid System, pairing a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine with electric motors for 236 horsepower. This is an increase over the previous generation's 219 horsepower while improving fuel efficiency.
Fuel consumption ratings for HEV models:
- LE AWD: 5.1 L/100 km city, 6.0 L/100 km highway, 5.5 L/100 km combined
- XLE AWD: 5.2 L/100 km city, 6.1 L/100 km highway, 5.7 L/100 km combined
- Limited AWD: 5.4 L/100 km city, 6.3 L/100 km highway, 5.8 L/100 km combined
- XSE AWD: 5.4 L/100 km city, 6.3 L/100 km highway, 5.8 L/100 km combined
- Woodland AWD: 5.7 L/100 km city, 6.7 L/100 km highway, 6.2 L/100 km combined
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Models will arrive later this spring, featuring Toyota's sixth-generation PHEV system. This powertrain delivers up to 320 combined system horsepower - an 18 horsepower increase over the outgoing system. The PHEV lineup will include SE, XSE, XSE Technology Package, and the all-new GR SPORT grades.
The PHEV system offers a manufacturer-estimated 80 kilometres of all-electric driving range - a 20% increase over the previous generation. The XSE Technology Package will feature DC fast charging through a CCS charging port, capable of charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Other PHEV models will be equipped with a J1772 charging port and can benefit from quicker charging at home or public stations with up to an 11 kW AC onboard charger.
Advanced Technology and Connectivity
The 2026 RAV4 introduces technology powered by the Arene software development platform, created by Woven by Toyota. This marks Toyota's first step toward fully software-defined vehicles and serves as the foundation for the RAV4's most advanced safety, security, and connectivity features.
Toyota Multimedia System debuts its newest generation in the RAV4, featuring the first integration of 5G network connectivity. The system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, simultaneous dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, customizable widgets, embedded Voice Assistant with faster "Hey Toyota" responses, turn-by-turn navigation displayed on the digital gauge cluster, and standard built-in Drive Recorder.
Screen sizes vary by grade, with a standard 10.5-inch touchscreen on base models and an available 12.9-inch touchscreen on higher trims. Digital HVAC controls are integrated into the bottom of the touchscreen display.
Digital Instrumentation includes a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster across all grades. The Limited HEV and XSE Technology Package PHEV grades receive a Head-Up Display as standard equipment.
Audio systems range from a six-speaker setup on base models to a nine-speaker JBL Audio system on higher grades.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0
The 2026 RAV4 becomes the first Toyota model to receive Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0), powered by the Arene software development platform. This latest version features updates to both hardware and detection capabilities.
