What can we expect from the new Toyota Highlander Grand?

Toyota made a surprise announcement in early December when it gave us a teaser image of an upcoming brand-new model called the Toyota Highlander Grand. The new Toyota Highlander Grand will provide a new sport utility vehicle option that will slot between the current three-row Toyota Highlander and the new generation Toyota Sequoia. There is a significant difference in interior and cargo space between these two models and we expect the Toyota Highlander Grand to fill that gap. But what does that mean exactly?

For starters, we can expect the new Toyota Highlander Grand to feature a longer wheelbase than the current Highlander which should translate into more interior space and more cargo capacity. The current Highlander offers roughly 500 L of cargo space behind the third row while the Highlander Grand will likely add 100 or 200 L to that capacity. We also expect a few inches more of second row legroom and likely a more welcoming third row as well.

The Toyota Highlander Grand will be more spacious than the current Highlander, but we don't expect significant changes in terms of the interior design or the powertrain options. The new Grand version will likely feature the same four-cylinder turbocharged 2.4-litre powertrain that was introduced to the 2023 Toyota Highlander. This engine delivers 265 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque, significantly more than the previous-generation V6 while also offering the same fuel economy rating.

We also expect the 2023 Toyota Highlander Grand to offer a hybrid version that will likely have a fuel economy rating of under 7 L per 100 km like the current model.

The goal of the Toyota Highlander Grand will be to provide more space to buyers who need a bit more rear passenger room and more cargo capacity than the current Highlander, but that don’t want a larger SUV like the Sequoia. It will be one more valuable addition to the already extensive lineup of Toyota sport utility vehicles.

Toyota will introduce the brand-new Toyota Highlander Grand in early 2023 so stay tuned for all of the details.
