The Toyota Safety Sense Explained

The Toyota Safety Sense Explained

Every Toyota vehicle comes standard with one of the three versions of the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of advanced active safety features. Here are their main differences.

TSS-P

This is the entry-level version of the TSS system found in some Toyota vehicles such as the Tacoma, the 4Runner, and the Sequoia. Even so, this technology includes the dynamic radar cruise control, the lane departure alert with steering assist, the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams.

TSS 2.0

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is the most popular version of the TSS suite since it is part of the standard equipment of the Corolla, the Prius, the RAV4, the Corolla Cross, the C-HR, the Venza, and the Sienna. The 2.0 version enhances features found in the TSS-P package by giving the pre-collision system the ability to detect cyclists during the day as well as vehicles and pedestrians at night. In addition, the Lane Keeping Assist gains Road-Edge Detection as part of the 2.0 version in order to prevent the vehicle from exiting the pavement while the driver is distracted. This system is also improved with the addition of Lane Tracing, which allows the vehicle to remain centred between the lane markers. Finally, the dynamic cruise control gains the full-speed range, which means that it can vary the vehicle’s speed all the way down to 0 km/h in heavy traffic situations without requiring the driver to touch the pedals.

TSS 2.5+

The most advanced version of the Toyota Safety Sense is the TSS 2.5+ version which is available in the Camry, the Tundra, and the Highlander. These vehicles benefit from all of the latest technologies in terms of vehicle safety, such as the Intersection Support and Emergency Steering Assist which are part of the pre-collision system or the Curve Speed Management function in the dynamic cruise control which slows the vehicle down before a curve and the accelerates it back to the set speed limit. In addition, the Lane Tracing feature is improved with enhanced line and road recognition.
